About the project
A small space for growing and tinkering.
The latest adventure begins at home, being an automated greenhouse and plant nursery. Combining my nerdy skills with nature, I hope to eventually produce different fruit whilst learning along the way.
The custom-built nursery is where seedlings get a healthy start in a fully automated environment with controlled light, humidity and temperature. Once they are ready, the greenhouse becomes their next stop with automated irrigation and ventilation helping to keep things comfortable and diseases to a minimum.
Featuring near instant camera feeds, and archived hourly snapshots, get ready to see a time-lapse of everything changing, stretching and growing.
The great thing about this project is it uses a lot of left over equipment from when I had chickens who had a heavily automated house (that's another story), all I needed to buy was a grow light and the greenhouse.

The wildflower patch
The wildflower patch is the less controlled side of the growing project. It was the gentle toe-dip that made me want to explore growing plants further, and here we are!
How it works

Bespoke automation brings sensors, switches, relays, cameras and safety rules together. Whilst a mobile app provides monitoring and manual control, and this page showcases the live camera feeds and data.

The mobile dashboard brings local weather, live camera feeds, nursery and greenhouse conditions, power use, manual controls and automation status together in one place.
Nursery airflow
The extractor responds to high temperature or humidity, then switches off again once both readings have settled.
Greenhouse airflow
The greenhouse fan responds automatically to changes in temperature and humidity, keeping a comfortable growing environment.
Morning irrigation
A short automated irrigation cycle runs each morning. Currently the pump runs on a timer, but this will soon be replaced by sensors allowing for irrigation zones and tailored watering schedules.
Pump safety
A separate cutoff prevents the irrigation pump from running continuously for more than two minutes.

Up next
Soil-moisture control
Work is underway on soil-moisture monitoring automation, so irrigation can respond to what the soil actually needs rather than relying only on a schedule. The existing pump safety cutoff and bespoke automation controls will stay in place.
