Backstory
For years I've had many shiny cars as part of the Motability scheme but since getting a wheelchair I found loading and unloading was a bit of a faff so I ended up getting my own van and eventually got rid of the car. You might ask why didn't I get a wheelchair van from Motability? Price - Every few years I'd need to put down a hefty deposit that I'd never see again. Going by my experience, for adapted cars they are fine but anything more than that, you have to be rich or you're buggered.
Here's my latest van with wheels in the back. Yet to figure out a name but it is a Ford Tourneo Connect, ironically an ex-Motability scheme van that was converted by Allied Mobility. Thankfully it's much less complicated compared to my previous van and has more room to fit more humans and wheelchairs in!
My first van was a 2012 Volkswagen Caddy converted by Sirus Autmotive that could be driven from a wheelchair if needed, but the selling point for me was an automatic ramp and plenty of room in the back to store my wheelchair. She wasn't perfect with a few dents and scratches from previous owners but life had become so much easier!
Since owning my van I've found going places is much simpler as I can just turn up and roll my wheels out the back and off I go. I do miss having a fancy car but it wasn't really practical anymore and it was sat collecting dust most of the time.
